Top 10 Thrifting Tips from PeachandTweed (Guest Blog)

I’ve got a special treat for you guys today – a little Guest Blog Post from the fabulous Amanda at Peach and Tweed. She has a beautiful Instagram account where she shares her vintage and second hand finds, a lot of which she also sells on Etsy. She’s got lovely taste and finds heaps of precious jewellery and clothes that is transformed once it’s taken out of the charity shop clutter!

Top 10 Thrifting Tips from peach&tweed

1 – Go often.  You won’t always hit the gold mine or find the best pieces if you just go every now and then.  I go almost every other day and sometimes I leave with nothing and sometimes I leave with 3 garbage bags full, it all depends on the day and whats available and since thrift stores get fresh items everyday, it only makes sense you go everyday too.

2 – Be patient, if you’re looking for specific things and don’t find them right away, its easy to lose your hope in ever finding it but you need to be patient and keep looking!  When I go to the thrift store I usually take over an hour because I like to go through as many racks as I can, you never know the gems you finding hiding among the ugly stuff.

3 – Bring cash!  A lot of thrift stores are charity owned so they don’t have computers or credit card acceptors like the large Goodwills or Salvation Army’s do.  So be prepared and bring cash.

4 – Don’t be afraid to ask the managers to set things aside for you!  If you’re like me, then you go to thrift stores for specific items, my top picks are vintage flannels, denim shirts, chunky sweaters, and vintage coats.  I go to my community thrift shop so often that the manager knows me by name and hold things on my list when I’m not able to get to the store and he keeps them in the back for me until I can pick them up, you never know what store managers are willing to do unless you ask.

5 – Think broadly! If you’re just looking for a little sprucing up in your closet then keep an open mind and think outside the box.  If you find a top and you’re not sure what to wear it with, picture it with different combinations like skirts, pants or accessories, sometimes its hard to see what the final outfit would look like but don’t put back anything until you can’t picture it in a complete outfit

6 – Don’t be afraid to ask for a discount!  I am a big believer in being cheap… If you’re buying in bulk, especially at somewhere like a flea market or carboot – don’t be afraid to haggle.

7 – If you don’t absolutely love something, don’t buy it!  I can’t even begin to express how much money Ive wasted buying, “Maybe I’ll wear this” items… if you don’t love it in the store, you won’t love it when you get home, so only buy things that you can’t stop thinking about.

8 – Bring someone with you. I love thrift shopping with my friends or my mom and sister, its always a lot more fun when you have someone to shop with, and they give you honest advice if you’re on the fence about an item

9 – Make sure to look at all the sections of the store.  Even if you go in just looking for a sweater or a skirt, go look at the shoes and the housewares while you’re at it. You never know what you’re going to find, and you’re already there so you might as well look at everything!

10 – Bring donations when you go.  I can’t even stress how easy it is to save money just simply by bringing a donation with you.  Every girl has enough that they don’t use or wear anymore hiding in the back of your closet that you could easily fill up a bag and bring it as a donation when you go.  A lot of stores offer discounts if you donate, and even if they don’t – it gives you good thrifting karma and makes space for new purchases in your wardrobe!

Hope you found some handy hints in here! Definitely let me know if you’d like to do an OOTD or tips guest blog – I’d love to have you.
